Elementary Counseling Services
Elementary school counselors work closely with students, staff members, and parents to help students improve academic achievement and develop the personal and social skills that will help students be successful in school and in life. They also work to facilitate collaboration by communicating with parents and consulting with staff members in order to provide a greater understanding of students’ needs. School counselors are student advocates who strive to ensure that students become effective lifelong learners and that the school environment provides a positive and successful learning experience.
Through short-term individual counseling sessions and small group meetings, counselors help children cope with difficult and/or unchangeable life events, help children recognize and make use of their potential, give children the opportunity to share their feelings and concerns, develop problem solving ability, teach decision making skills, and build self-esteem and confidence. Individual counseling in the school setting is short-term and solution-focused. The goal of school-based individual counseling is to identify and overcome any barriers to learning a student may be facing. Counseling in a school setting can be very beneficial, but is not a replacement for regular or outpatient therapy. There is a list of names of some local therapists under the "Healthcare Services" heading in the LEE’S SUMMIT R-7 SCHOOL DISTRICT COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE if you are interested in pursuing outside counseling for your student.
To initiate short-term individual counseling with the school counselor to overcome barriers to school success, students may write the counselor a note or tell their teacher that they would like to speak with the counselor. Parents and teachers may request that the school counselor talk with a student if they think it would be helpful. Parents or teachers may complete the referral form requesting that a child see the school counselor.
